Condutores silenciosos canto surdo
Que um dia subitamente emergem
No grande pátio liso dos desastres
Sophia de Mello Breyner

People are afraid to merge on the freeway
She laughs and looks out the window and I think for a minute that she's going to start to cry. I'm standing by the door and I look over at the Elvis Costello poster, at his eyes, watching her, watching us, and I try to get her away from it, so I tell her to come over here, sit down, and she thinks I want to hug her or something and she comes over to me and puts her arms around my back and says something like 'I think we've all lost some sort of feeling'.

O quarto
Morrer, porém, não é fácil,
ficam sombras nem sequer as nossas,
e a nossa voz fala-nos
numa língua estrangeira.
Apaga a luz e vira-te para o outro lado
e acorda amanhã como novo,
barba impecavelmente feita,

A minuciosa construção do absoluto literário. Estou a falar contigo, a viver contigo, a morrer contigo.

Adeus Professor
Encontrei uma preta
que estava a chorar,
pedi-lhe uma lágrima
para a analisar.
Recolhi a lágrima
com todo o cuidado
num tubo de ensaio
bem esterilizado.
Olhei-a de um lado,
do outro e de frente:
tinha um ar de gota
muito transparente.
Mandei vir os ácidos,
as bases e os sais,
as drogas usadas
em casos que tais.
Ensaiei a frio,
experimentei ao lume,
de todas as vezes
deu-me o que é costume:

Long enough and just so long
as freedom is a breakfastfood
or truth can live with right and wrong
or molehills are from mountains made
—long enough and just so long
will being pay the rent of seem
and genius please the talentgang
and water most encourage flame
as hatracks into peachtrees grow
or hopes dance best on bald men’s hair
and every finger is a toe
and any courage is a fear
—long enough and just so long
will the impure think all things pure
and hornets wail by children stung
or as the seeing are the blind
and robins never welcome spring
nor flatfolk prove their world is round
nor dingsters die at break of dong
and common’s rare and millstones float
—long enough and just so long
tomorrow will not be too late
worms are the words but joy’s the voice
down shall go which and up come who
breasts will be breasts thighs will be thighs
deeds cannot dream what dreams can do
—time is a tree(this life one leaf)
but love is the sky and i am for you
just so long and long enough

Invisíveis sombras
Invisíveis sombras entre nós
a casa das coisas.
Invisíveis como a nossa
visível obstinação.
Um pouco de luz nos faz pender
para um dos lados.
Uma luz que não sabemos.
Uma luz que invisíveis sombras
lança
entre nós a casa as coisas
e nos faz pender para um lado
um dos lados
o lado que não sabemos
dessa luz que nos conhece.

Há espelhos
– em que de uma forma confiada
nos vamos olhando
todos e cada um dos nossos dias –
que de repente
se partem
e deixam ver
nos seus pedaços gelados
essas facas de que eram feitos.
Lorenzo Oliván, Visiones y revisiones (tradução de Joaquim Manuel Magalhães).

Anyway,
“It was the first time I ever had to go to bed in a hospital and contemplate my own urinary tract hanging on the wall — a sort of amber Rothko,” he says. It startled him into realising how much he wanted to live.
“I had suicidal thoughts when I was young. I fancied myself as a melancholic, quite a lot of people do, it’s a fashionable thing. Anyway, all these ideas were coming to me when I was going to sleep, ideas of self-destruction. They all promptly vanished the moment I was under real threat. There was a sudden urge to live. I wanted to do more, to write more.”

(there are millions of suns left,)
1
I celebrate myself, and sing myself,
And what I assume you shall assume,
For every atom belonging to me as good belongs to you.
I loafe and invite my soul,
I lean and loafe at my ease observing a spear of summer grass.
My tongue, every atom of my blood, form'd from this soil, this air,
Born here of parents born here from parents the same, and their parents the same,
I, now thirty-seven years old in perfect health begin,
Hoping to cease not till death.
Creeds and schools in abeyance,
Retiring back a while sufficed at what they are, but never forgotten,
I harbor for good or bad, I permit to speak at every hazard,
Nature without check with original energy.
2
Houses and rooms are full of perfumes, the shelves are crowded with perfumes,
I breathe the fragrance myself and know it and like it,
The distillation would intoxicate me also, but I shall not let it.
The atmosphere is not a perfume, it has no taste of the distillation, it is odorless,
It is for my mouth forever, I am in love with it,
I will go to the bank by the wood and become undisguised and naked,
I am mad for it to be in contact with me.
The smoke of my own breath,
Echoes, ripples, buzz'd whispers, love-root, silk-thread, crotch and vine,
My respiration and inspiration, the beating of my heart, the passing of blood and air through my lungs,
The sniff of green leaves and dry leaves, and of the shore and dark-color'd sea-rocks, and of hay in the barn,
The sound of the belch'd words of my voice loos'd to the eddies of the wind,
A few light kisses, a few embraces, a reaching around of arms,
The play of shine and shade on the trees as the supple boughs wag,
The delight alone or in the rush of the streets, or along the fields and hill-sides,
The feeling of health, the full-noon trill, the song of me rising from bed and meeting the sun.
Have you reckon'd a thousand acres much? have you reckon'd the earth much?
Have you practis'd so long to learn to read?
Have you felt so proud to get at the meaning of poems?
Stop this day and night with me and you shall possess the origin of all poems,
You shall possess the good of the earth and sun, (there are millions of suns left,)
You shall no longer take things at second or third hand, nor look through the eyes of the dead, nor feed on the spectres in books,
You shall not look through my eyes either, nor take things from me,
You shall listen to all sides and filter them from your self.

In a milk white gown
Sailing on the wind
In a milk white gown
Dropping circle stones on a sun dial
Playing hide and seek
With the ghosts of dawn
Waiting for a smile from a sun child.
