Square with four circles

Por Felici Varini.
Regarding the single versus multiple perspectives, Varini's installations congeal in one particular location but they exist in almost limitless form from the numerous other available perspectives. In the case of Square with four circles in New Haven, Connecticut, it is the walkway between College and Temple streets on axis with the Crown Street parking garage spiral that offers the obvious location for the shapes to register as one apparently flat image. Yet movement through the block's interior gives people partial views, skewed perspectives and other "incorrect" glimpses of the artwork.
Felice Varini’s fleeting works are joyous optical tricks which explore the relativity of time and space.

Anybody who tries in a few minutes to portray your work will end up articulating a series of paradoxes. You have created a cosmos that does not want to be a coherent universe. You have given us ingenious versions of a history that will not allow itself to be taken captive. You have taken the stage as the kind of narrator we feel we have long been familiar with - but with all of our contemporary liberties at your fingertips and imbued with contemporary scepticism about definite knowledge. Your distinguishing mark is irony coupled with discerning empathy, distance without distance.
Distance without distance, de facto.

How Do You Think It Feels, Lou Reed, Berlin (RCA, 1973).
In retrospect, of course, Berlin is probably one of Reed's best pieces of work. Reed's general attitude throughout the record is one of having lost hope-- "there's no way to win, and I don't give a fuck." And it's an attitude that's been copped by numerous bands on some of their classic works.
Twenty Four Hours
Joy Division, Closer (Factory, 1980).
Rock, however defined, rarely seems and sounds so important, so vital, and so impossible to resist or ignore as here.
As here.

Everyone dated the demise of our neighborhood from the suicide of the Lisbon girls.
People saw their clairvoyance in the wiped-out elms and harsh sunlight.
Some thought the torture tearing the Lisbon girls pointed to a simple refusal to accept the world as it was handed down to them:
So full of flaws.
But the only thing we are certain of after all these years is the insufficiency of explanations.

Morning
I've got to tell you
how I love you always
I think of it on grey
mornings with death
in my mouth the tea
is never hot enough
then and the cigarette
dry the maroon robe
chills me I need you
and look out the window
at the noiseless snow
At night on the dock
the buses glow like
clouds and I am lonely
thinking of flutes
I miss you always
when I go to the beach
the sand is wet with
tears that seem mine
although I never weep
and hold you in my
heart with a very real
humor you'd be proud of
the parking lot is
crowded and I stand
rattling my keys the car
is empty as a bicycle
what are you doing now
where did you eat your
lunch and were there
lots of anchovies it
is difficult to think
of you without me in
the sentence you depress
me when you are alone
Last night the stars
were numerous and today
snow is their calling
card I'll not be cordial
there is nothing that
distracts me music is
only a crossword puzzle
do you know how it is
when you are the only
passenger if there is a
place further from me
I beg you do not go

We Shall Prevail
I've got a theory, and it's this: Steve Jobs believes he's gambling Apple's future — the future of a corporation with a market cap well over US $200Bn — on an all-or-nothing push into a new market. HP have woken up and smelled the forest fire, two or three years late; Microsoft are mired in a tar pit, unable to grasp that the inferno heading towards them is going to burn down the entire ecosystem in which they exist.

Outro dia
A mentira distorce a realidade.

Quinto comunicado do MFA

So what next for Portugal?
Pity the serious Portuguese politician who argues that fiscal probity calls for early belt-tightening. The European Union, the European Central Bank and the Greeks have all proven that the euro zone nations have no threshold for pain, and European Union money will be there for anyone who wants it. The Portuguese politicians can do nothing but wait for the situation to get worse, and then demand their bailout package, too. No doubt Greece will be back next year for more. And the nations that “foolishly” already started their austerity, such as Ireland and Italy, must surely be wondering whether they too should take the less austere path.

Yesterday, upon the stair,
I met a man who wasn’t there
He wasn’t there again today
I wish, I wish he’d go away...
When I came home last night at three
The man was waiting there for me
But when I looked around the hall
I couldn’t see him there at all!
Go away, go away, don’t you come back any more!
Go away, go away, and please don’t slam the door... (slam!)
Last night I saw upon the stair
A little man who wasn’t there
He wasn’t there again today
Oh, how I wish he’d go away

Romanian Rip

Even though a photographic document is suspect by nature, we often want to believe in it. The photographer is manipulated by this subject just as much as the subject manipulates him. By inserting myself in each image, I wanted to ask the question of the truth in the photographic image. The fluorescent orange of the shutter release, clearly visible, asserts my intrusion inside the image. I thus sign the making of the document and its origin.
At the same time, I try to merge into the image. By dressing up and behaving like the people photographed, I strive to erase our representations of nationalities and social backgrounds linked to dress codes. Strangely, no-one considered this approach as being odd and all said they felt more at ease in front of the camera when I was with them. Absent from the captions in which the other names betray their romanian, italian, serbian, hungarian, german, austrian or turkish origins of the people I photographed, I question my position and the imaginary barriers raised by men between them.

Remember Barbara
It was raining nonstop in Brest that day
and you walked smiling
artless delighted dripping wet
in the rain
Remember Barbara
It was raining nonstop in Brest
and I saw you on rue de Siam
You were smiling

Remember Barbara
You whom I did not know
You who did not know me
Remember
Remember that day all the same
Don't forget
A man was sheltering under a porch
and he called your name
Barbara
and you ran toward him in the rain
Dripping water delighted artless
and you threw yourself in his arms
Remember that Barbara
and don't be angry if I talk to you
I talk to all those I love
even if I've seen them only once
I talk to all those who love
even if I don't know them
Remember Barbara
Don't forget
that wise happy rain
on your happy face
in that happy town
That rain on the sea
on the arsenal
on the boat from Ouessant
Oh Barbara
What an idiot war
What has happened to you now
In this rain of iron
of fire of steel of blood
and the one who held you tight in his arms
lovingly
is he dead vanished or maybe still alive
Oh Barbara
It is raining nonstop in Brest
as it rained before
But it's not the same and everything is ruined
It's a rain of mourning terrible and desolate
It's not even a storm any more
of iron of steel of blood
Just simply clouds
that die like dogs
Dogs that disappear
along the water in Brest
and are going to rot far away
far far away from Brest
where there is nothing left.

I know they're our boys
Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb, Stanley Kubrick, 1964.
And it was at this point I decided to treat the story as a nightmare comedy. Following this approach, I found it never interfered with presenting well-reasoned arguments. In culling the incongruous, it seemed to me to be less stylized and more realistic than any so-called serious, realistic treatment, which in fact is more stylized than life itself by its careful exclusion of the banal, the absurd, and the incongruous. In the context of impending world destruction, hypocrisy, misunderstanding, lechery, paranoia, ambition, euphemism, patriotism, heroism, and even reasonableness can evoke a grisly laugh.
As a nightmare comedy.

The moments between the moments

However, as I buzzed, I became highly aware of how uncomfortable he was. He appeared as if he literally could not settle inside himself. I noticed that he wasn’t even playing a tune. He seemed to just be playing scales. I began to focus on what I call ‘the moments between the moments’ and that’s where I found my groove with him. I always know when I’ve hit it, my stride, my groove. I know when it’s peaking. It’s a wave and you ride it for as long as you can. You feel an external energy take you over but it comes from the inside, you can’t help it, you’re buzzing on it. And the thing is this: what you’re buzzing on is never the thing you thought you had come there to get. It’s always something you didn’t know there was until it showed itself to you. In this case, I had come hoping to unleash Andrew Lloyd Webber’s inner pub singer but instead, I found a man who, despite all those accolades and success, seemed unsure, nervous, awkward and most of all, fragile.
O Chris Floyd tirou fotografias ao Andrew Lloyd Webber.
A reter:
And the thing is this: what you’re buzzing on is never the thing you thought you had come there to get. It’s always something you didn’t know there was until it showed itself to you.
Until it showed itself to you.

Morning
I've got to tell you
how I love you always
I think of it on grey
mornings with death
in my mouth the tea
is never hot enough
then and the cigarette
dry the maroon robe
chills me I need you
and look out the window
at the noiseless snow
At night on the dock
the buses glow like
clouds and I am lonely
thinking of flutes
I miss you always
when I go to the beach
the sand is wet with
tears that seem mine
although I never weep
and hold you in my
heart with a very real
humor you'd be proud of
the parking lot is
crowded and I stand
rattling my keys the car
is empty as a bicycle
what are you doing now
where did you eat your
lunch and were there
lots of anchovies it
is difficult to think
of you without me in
the sentence you depress
me when you are alone
Last night the stars
were numerous and today
snow is their calling
card I'll not be cordial
there is nothing that
distracts me music is
only a crossword puzzle
do you know how it is
when you are the only
passenger if there is a
place further from me
I beg you do not go

It may be that poetry makes life's nebulous events tangible to me and restores their detail; or conversely that poetry brings forth the intangible quality of incidents which are all too concrete and circumstantial. Or each on specific occasions, or both all the time.

It may be that poetry makes life's nebulous events tangible to me and restores their detail; or conversely that poetry brings forth the intangible quality of incidents which are all too concrete and circumstantial. Or each on specific occasions, or both all the time.

Little Sister
Queens of the Stone Age, Lullabies to Paralize (Interscope, 2005).
A minute-long solo that is at once directionless and exponential in its accumulation of tension.
Disintegration
The Cure, Disintegration (Fiction, 1989).
Screaming like this in the hope of the secrecy.

Provavelmente

The same guys
“We did it in the past — we will do it again,” Finance Minister Fernando Teixeira dos Santos said Tuesday in a telephone interview. “We are the same guys. We are committed to doing it.”
But this time the same guys lack a solid majority.
Economistas?

Estou sempre a voltar a isto
Termino.

VCR
The xx, xx (Young Turks, 2009).
The Inherent Beauty In A Failed Attempt To Reconstruct

Within the world of mathematics it is just as easy to go backwards as it is forward. It is only within human experience that going backwards poses such a problem. We and our perceived physical surroundings are locked into a series of moments where the future is possible and varied but the past is locked and cannot be revisited.

A world no one else has ever seen
Coming home from very lonely places, all of us go a little mad: whether from great personal success, or just an all-night drive, we are the sole survivors of a world no one else has ever seen.

Invictus
Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.
It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll.
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.
William Ernest Henley
